2022-2023, lime wood on contrasting base
Shown at Morley Made 2023

This sculpture serves as expressions of my passion for marine wildlife, translating the obscure realm of the deep sea into tangible form. Depicting a specimen of the deepest-living genus of octopus, Grimpoteuthis, this piece captures a creature that feels plucked from a surrealist dream – sharing a sense of wonder and underscoring our shared responsibility to protect the ocean’s interconnected web of life.

Process
Through the process of shaping the sculpture, I focused on contrasting the animal’s profound softness with its seemingly harsh habitat. Carving flowing curves and emphasising the ear-like fins the octopus uses to glide along the ocean floor. The recoiling pose captures a specific narrative moment: the creature’s reaction to a sudden, alien glare of a scientific submersible. A physical exploration of the difficulty and limited ways with which these beautiful ecosystems are observed by human eyes.
