During my two years of work for a medical technology company, I have designed numerous touch interfaces for equipment used during minimally invasive surgery, such as insufflators and pumps.
The challenge in designing for healthcare are very strict norms and regulations that every piece of equipment has to comply with, because in the OR, lives are literally at stake.
I have also learned to design for tight physical boundaries, such as low screen resolutions, very limited availability of typefaces (Arial became my best friend ;) ) and limited visibility of the screen in the OR.
As time to market in medical technology is quite long for regulatory reasons, only a few of these devices are on the market as of yet. One of them is the Flow 50 Insufflator from Aesculap, which you can see above.
